For the
past 6 weeks I have been teaching a group of 12
primary school children how to fish at a local
school. This all stemmed from a talk I gave back
last year, and after the success of that I really
fancied the challenge. It turned out that the
majority of the kids had done very little fishing,
so we really were starting from scratch. During the
6 weeks I taught the kids about different types of
fishing methods and got them prepared for the final
lesson which was to actually be by the waters edge.
When the
day came, the weather looked like it was going to be
on top form, with dry and sunny being promised. This
was not going to bode well with the fishing, but at
least the children's guardians would be able to soak
up a bit of sun and most probably find the day a bit
easier! Due to the fishing trip taking place during
the school half term, a lot of kids were unable to
attend due to prior arrangements, but those who did
were exceptionally keen after casting in a field for
6 weeks....
The
plan for the day was to get all the kids fishing
different styles, from Float fishing to
Quivertipping, to sitting behind alarms to stalking
off of the surface. To day began with many of the
youngsters catching their first fish in the shape of
small Roach and Rudd on the float and quivertip.
Fish sizes then started to get a lot larger as the
rods behind alarms started to become increasingly
more productive; with a brace of large Rudd to
pellets being an early highlight.
As
the day wore on, the intense heat soon brought most
of the lakes inhabitants up to the surface. This
could mean only one thing, and after grabbing the
stalking gear, two of the young lads and me went in
search of some surface feeding Carp. This turned out
to be a right result, and after a lot of nail biting
moments, a 12lb 8oz Ghostie was landed. During the
same time a couple of Carp had been landed under the
supervision of my Dad, too the alarms back at base
camp.
All
the kids landed some kind of personal best and all
appeared to have a great day. I even managed to
speak to Stu Dextor of Coarse Fisherman magazine,
and arrange for the trip to be included in the
August edition of the mag. I will put photo's and
the full article up on here at a later date. |
