Today
was meant to be nothing more than a day for going
out on my Dads new boat. He has recently bought a
little day cruiser, and since then has been in it
more than he has been at home! I agreed to meet Dad
at our Marina, but due to a few too many beverages
the night before, didn't arrive till quite a bit
later in the day. I took with me, my float rod and
ultra light lure rod just for a bit of fun. Now
after Dad had been tarting the boat up for hours,
the last thing he wanted was for me to be getting it
fishy, so I was evicted to the back of it to sit on
the diving platform. From here things started
getting a little crazy....
The only
bait I had on me was Bread, so I rigged up a size 16
and pinched a little piece of flake on to the hook
and fished this below a float. Bearing in mind my
biggest previous fish from the marina, other than
Perch, was probably a small 4-5 inch Rudd; imagine
my surprise when I hooked and landed a cracking 2lb
Rudd! That's certainly worth remembering! I couldn't
believe what had just happened, but what happened
next really shocked me! I made another cast with
bread again, the float slid away and I proceeded to
retrieve what I thought was a spirited Rudd of
around 4oz; but oh no, it turned out to be a 4oz
Mirror Carp!! I couldn't believe it, a fluke I
thought.... Next cast, a 5 inch Rudd, now that's
more like it! The cast after that, a 2oz Common
Carp!! What on earth was going on! Surely Carp
aren't breeding in our Fenland Rivers? Well, in
actual fact I think they are. I will certainly be
keeping an eye on them, it isn't good news for the
native stocks if they are!
After
all this I decided I needed to rest, my hangover had
well and truly taken hold by now. We decided to take
the boat up River and try a couple of known Perch
spots. I bought a Rod and Reel combo from the states
a while back now and apart from a few tiny Pike
hadn't really used it. This was soon to change. I
attached a small rubber jig, and before long hit
into a Perch of around 6oz. Excellent I thought, my
first Perch on the rod. I then clipped on a micro
jointed Rapala Shad Lure in silver and proceeded to
cast it around the back of the boat. On the second
cast, right at the end of the retrieve I thought I
could see something behind my lure. I paused, and
then gave the smallest of twitches so that I would
not be detected by the stalking predator. At that
instant, once again that week a tennis ball sized
mouth shot to the surface and sucked in my lure. I
struck and then bundled what looked like a similar
sized Perch to the one during my last session into
the net. On the scales it went 1oz larger at 3lb
3oz, i was delighted, a new Lure caught PB for
Perch! As you can imagine, my headache miraculously
disappeared after that. |
