Amongst
all the Jigging and Piking sessions, I did manage to
get out and try for a few other species as well. I
tried a few evening sessions Chub fishing close to
home, fishing Steak with Mince in the feeder, with
some good results. On every occasion a few Chub were
landed, with highlights being a 5lb 6oz fish for me,
and a new PB of 4lb 7oz for Winky.
Another
species I had a couple of breif sessions after were
Rudd. I know most will see this as not a very
seasonal target, but Rudd actually feed
exceptionally well in even the coldest of
conditions, you just need to locate them. I knew of
a couple of spots which are no deeper than about one
foot, but for some reason, even with frost on the
ground, the Rudd congregate around. This required a
stealthy approach, and once a fish was hooked, you
could say goodbye to the rest of them. Needless to
say, in two quick sessions, I landed two Rudd, the
biggest going 2lb 4oz.
Last
year I vowed to target Zander more than last season,
before the season came too an end, but unfortunately
I only managed to get out for them twice. During
these after work sessions, Winky and myself landed
four Zeds; Winky a brace of 7's and me a brace of
4's. It wasn't all bad though, we had definitely
found a new Zander spot to concentrate on next
season.
The
last weekend of the season saw me heading back to
the Wye with mate Andy. This time I fancied my
chances with the Pike, after already landing my
target
6lb+ Chub from the
River during my last visit. This turned out to be a
big mistake however, and with only a couple of jacks
and Chub to show for my efforts, the trip had been a
bit gutting. Andy on the other hand went all out
Chub and landed some cracking fish, topped by a 6lb
3oz Chub and 8lb 6oz Barbel. Next time! |
