10/05/07 - Finally!!!!

In recent weeks I had been desperately trying to beat my old Drain Tench personal best of 6lb 4oz from a local Stillwater. For some reason, I had been extremely unfortunate, and after watching Winky land his fair share of decent fish I was getting slightly ticked off to put it mildly! I decided that a day off work was in order to go and have a go when hopefully there wouldn't be so many lines in the water; this proved to be a very good decision!

The day started with me casting two Pineapple pop-up's out to the likely spots near marginal weeds. This was a method that had been catching well for both Wink and I, but my fish had been a much lower stamp in size. We had also started to drop a lot of fish on this method, so when I lost a fish very early on I knew straight away my rigs needed changing. As a back up bait, I had brought along a couple of kilos of 10mm Halibut Pellets and some artificial corn soaked in Pineapple flavouring. I decided to set one rod with a pellet and corn combo fished alongside a small PVA bag of mixed pellets. I baited my other rod differently as well, this being with a new Boilie that I was testing from local tackle shop - Hooked in Newmarket.

These changes soon brought a response and before long I had landed a 5lb male on the pellet rig. This was soon followed by the smallest Tench I had seen from the venue at about 3lb. This had me worried that I was destined to continue my small fish run.... Just when I was beginning to think the worse however, my left hand rod roared off and a good fish was hooked. After a few minutes of what can be only described as sheer panic, I was soon looking down at a new PB Tench of 7lb 2oz!  At that moment I felt as if I had had a huge weight lifted from my shoulders, finally I had beaten that old PB.  As I was preparing to slip this fish back however, the Boilie baited rod also roared off, this time resulting in a 6lb 13oz fish.  Another fish to beat my old PB; So, so typical!

I continued to fish until about 5pm before I packed up content.  I had done what I had set out to do, and I also backed up those four Tench with six others to just over 6lb. At least that one's ticked off for this season, hopefully it won't be such a nightmare to beat next year!!
