Since
our trip to France, I really haven't been fishing
for nearly two whole weeks; serious stuff. I have
however been on the look out for new waters, and
think I may have located a couple of Rivers that may
hold some surprises. After checking out Google earth
as usual, Winky and I decided to do a bit of looking
around on a couple of different Rivers. With the
weather ever so slightly cooling we had decided that
our attentions would now move on to Chub and Perch.
Even though Chub are not at their greatest weights
at this time of year, the fishing is still very good
and gives a perfect opportunity to locate a few
possible places for the backend of the season.
After
having a good wonder around we found our first spot.
It was a pool full of features, which just happened
to include a 6 inch deep gravel bar right in the
middle of it. This bar was perfect for putting the
chairs on! In front of this were overhanging trees
lining the far bank, these spots just screamed Chub.
We soon confirmed this after a few chunks of
floating crust soon disappeared! We both decided
that this really was going to be a one man stalking
effort, but if we were to feed heavy with maggots we
may perhaps be able to extract the majority of the
shoal. To top it off the flow was perfect for
trotting baits down under a loafer float, this
certainly had the potential for some fantastic
sport.
With
all this in mind we later returned with 5 pints of
maggots. We sat back in the river and began to
patiently feed maggots for more than an hour. During
this time we could clearly see big white lips and
the odd swirl just under the surface as the Chub had
started to compete for the free offerings. See this
sort of feeding can make it very tempting to make a
cast, but the more you feed, the more you are likely
to catch!
We
then had to decide who would make the first cast;
luckily for Wink he won the coin toss! First run
through with the float was met with instant action
from a 3+ chub. My first run through resulted in the
same outcome. This continued for our next two casts
before the stamp of fish decreased and we ran out of
bait. We had used 5 pints in less than two hours
fishing!
We
both finished the session happy; we had not caught
monsters, but the fishing had been really enjoyable. |
