After a
disastrous first weekend on Blithfield, I decided to
stick with Pike as my target, but to try a water
less alien to me - the fenland Drains. This was to
be my first Piking session of the season back home,
and armed with a few deads, I decided on a
leapfrogging approach on a quiet little drain. The
walk to the venue was quite hefty, so my decision to
walk it in Neoprene chest waders soon left me
cursing my stupidity!
On
arriving at my starting point on the drain, I
collapsed and laid back for a second, planning on
recuperating before I cast. However, after seeing a
Pike porpoise whilst lying back soon had me baiting
the rods in double quick time, totally forgetting I
that I wasn't in to healthier state! Both my rods
were set up with float ledgers, and once in place I
sat back down. There was no time to rest though, and
no sooner had I sat on the floor I received my first
run of the day.
From
that point forward I didn't have a single chance to
sit back and chill. runs were coming thick and fast,
and my bait supply was drying up even faster!! At
one point, a fish I was hand lining slung the
herring bait off during the fight, landing just out
of reaching distance for me. Not too much to my
surprise, I watched as another Pike moved in and
took the herring! The fish were well and truly
having it, and in under two hours I had received 13
runs, landing 11 to a best of 16lb. I probably could
have had more, but i had run out of bait!
At
one point, whilst playing a fish, I heard a large
splash to my right where my other float used to be.
I quickly struck but felt no resistance. The other
fish was released and on retrieval of my other rig,
it became apparent what had happened. A pike had
struck my float and had pierced it with its teeth,
causing it to now sink!
Surprisingly, after all that fun, the walk back
wasn't that bad.... |
