After
returning from France, I had two options for what I
could do next. My first option was to get out and do
some Zander fishing like I had been planning all
season, whilst the other just seemed a little too
tempting. For a few months now, I have had access to
a large deep Farm Reservoir in the Fens. This
reservoir is 12 years old and has an unknown stock
of fish due to it being pumped into via a land
drain, and after hearing of a '2lb Perch' from a
local guy, I decided I needed to investigate.
Since
joining I have tried all manner of tactics from the
bank, but had yet to see any signs of a Perch. One
day though, whilst wading, I came across a dead fish
in the margins, which on close inspection turned out
to be a Perch of around 3lb in weight. This was all
I needed to get fired up for the place, and when I
was granted permission to get my boat on the venue,
I could hardly wait.
First
line of attack was to motor around the near 10 acre
water with the electric and check out the contours
with the fish finder. This proved useful, and soon
made it very clear that the water was deep, dropping
off to 25 feet deep pretty much straight away, and
then maintaining that depth. To start with I began
to troll lobworms on a bottom bouncing rig, and
before long this produced my first response in the
shape of my first Perch from the venue at about 6oz.
Not bad I thought, considering I couldn't get one
from the bank!
Many
more Perch were forthcoming, and whilst casting
lures, Wink managed the best at 1lb 10oz. As a
matter of interest, and with no experience in the
method, I attached a small 3" Fox Chubby shad and
began vertical jiggin below the boat. To my
surprise, I was into a 1 pounder straight away; and
then another! In fact, in the hour we tried the
method before having to leave we landed about ten
more Perch to vertical jigging.
One
thing was for sure, we were going back, and sooner
the better!! |
