Being
that time of year again, I well and truly had my big
Rudd head on again. Although this year, they were to
take a bit of a back seat to some enormous Carp that
Winky and I had located. For the first night of the
season we had decided on a much more neglected
stretch of Drain; not only because we expected it to
produce well, but also to get away from the crowded
stretches. Unfortunately I knew that the Rudd
probably wouldn't be a viable target, but
considering some of the Carp we had seen were
extremely large, we though we should give it a go.
Now,
considering we had seen large Carp in the swim every
night for a week, we were pretty disappointed when
we didn't see anything on the opening night. The
stretch we were on appeared totally dead, we really
thought we had made a dreadful mistake, and thoughts
of the large Rudd were really starting to nag! Come
12am, both Wink and I cast our Carp rods and then
began to float fish, but with only one Bream of
around 2lb in the first hour we decided to get some
kip and get up early.
At 3
O'clock in the morning I was woken by an absolute
one toner too my ledgered Tiger nut set up. This
turned out to be a cracking Common of 15lb 2oz,
making it my largest Drain Common to date. I
returned my prize and got my head down. Come first
light, I woke to hear a few choice words coming from
Winks direction. After popping my head out the Bivvy,
it turned out that he had just lost one of the real
biggies at the net, a right gutter!
This
ended up being the only action from Carp during our
stay, and even though we went on to land lots of
nice Tench to about 6lb and a few Rudd to 1lb 8oz, I
knew deep down that the large Rudd I usually target
at this time were just waiting for me. With this in
mind, I knew I was going to be visiting further
downstream very soon. |
