During
late August, both myself and Wink fancied checking
out a small stream we knew that contained a few
decent Chub. The venue in question was not overly
deep, probably around a foot and a half at the most,
with the majority being about 8-10 inches deep. The
venue stretch doesn't contain a massive head of good
Chub, but there are isolated pockets of decent fish,
and when found, a couple of fish of fish can
'usually' be on the cards.
We had a
simple game plan, and that was to throw pieces of
floating bread into the water and follow it until
something surfaced. We had done this a lot in the
past and it seemed to be the best way of locating
the fish without getting right on top of them and
spooking them. Today though it wasn't to be, and
after a good long walk, nothing was making it's
presence known. Before long however, we got lucky.
On a bend next to where an even smaller stream
entered the water, a small shoal of sizable Chub
were holding up in some subsurface weed.
The
first decision that had to be made, was who was
going to make the first cast. As usual in this
situation, a coin was flipped, and as it turned out,
it was Wink who's luck was in. We both decided a
piece of sinking flake was probably the best option,
so without further ado the rod was baited and whilst
tucked behind the undergrowth, Wink made a cast
slightly downstream. I got in position so that I
could watch the bait drift downstream. As the bait
nearly settled on the bottom, about 5 feet
downstream, it was engulfed by one of the smaller
fish.
At
that point I told Wink to strike, we then both
sprung up from our crouching positions and bundled
the fish into the net. The fish weighed just over
4lb and was a great deal of fun catching, although
it did prove to be our only chance and after a
little more searching nothing more materialized. |
