After
yesterday, I fancied trying a water that I knew
would definitely give me the chance of a bigger
fish. My Dad had decided to join me, but straight
away he experienced bad luck as his rod tip
shattered before the first cast was made, leaving
him with just one rod to fish with. We had decided
to walk to a certain point on a local drain where we
had caught some decent Pike in the past and leap
frog the rods all the way back to the car.
By
midday we hadn't had any action what-so-ever. The
conditions were far from perfect, with the water
being crystal clear and the weather conditions being
extremely bright; in all honesty I wasn't very
confident at all. Then, out of the blue, the
drop-off fell and the Delkim let rip. I ran to the
rod baited with lamprey, and wound down to a fish
that was steadily taken line from the open bale arm.
Upon striking I knew the fish was bigger than
anything that I had hooked the previous session, but
when it weighed 13lb 5oz, I must admit to being a
little disappointed, but at the same time pleased
that I was at least on the score sheet.
As
the day went on, we ended up back at the car with an
hour to spare before darkness, so we decided to walk
a bit further down in the opposite direction to a 50
metre stretch of rushes lining the near bank. Once
there, we found enough room to put three rods out in
between the rushes. Just as it was getting dark, my
rod baited with Joey Mackerel signalled a take. Now
usually on this drain, a take on a Mackerel usually
means a decent fish, so when I struck into a Joey
Mackerel sized Pike, I was quite surprised!
This
turned out to be the last of the sessions action,
and once again Dad hadn't faired too well. We'll
just have to try again when the conditions look a
bit better, the drain could certainly have done with
a bit of colour in it. |
