2/12/06 - Predatory Trout

After missing a weeks fishing the week before, I was ready and warring to get into a few Pike from my local rivers and drains. About mid-week I had an email from a friend, offering me the opportunity to fish a new water, one of which I knew little about. What I did know about this water however, is that it used to be fished by trout fisherman, so I gathered it would be worth a go.

I managed to get my Dad on the water with me on the day, and we proceeded to look all around the pit looking for signs of movement, but very little was showing even at first light. We decided to set up in a corner where we had previously seen a grebe working as this was our only indication. I cast a Lamprey and a Joey Mackerel, whilst Dad cast a Turbo Smelt and a Roach Deadbait. About 10 minutes into the session, my Mackerel rod sprung to life and I was soon winding down like crazy trying to keep up with what ever I had hooked. Next thing I knew a whacking great trout cleared the water with my Mackerel hanging out its jaws! The fish turned out to be a very pale Rainbow of around 6lb, but what amazed me the most was it's dentures, this thing had some serious teeth for a Trout!

We soon began to wonder if the top predators in the Pit were indeed large Trout, and after a couple more lost fish we scaled our dead baits down to 1/3 sections of Joey Mackerel. We then proceeded to catch large Trout on a regular basis, with a few Browns to a personal best for me of 3lb 8oz. The biggest Rainbow I managed weighed in at 7lb. It was a really fun day, as i'd never experienced such predatory Trout in my life, although fishing such a water with deadbaits was very unusual in itself for me.

I'm not sure whether this water will actually contain any Pike, but the more I've thought about it; I think if it does, they could possibly be some very large fish. hopefully I shall get another opportunity when the conditions get a lot cooler. For now though, it's back to the Pike and Zeds of the Fens, and with any luck some really cold weather so that I can begin my Roach fishing campaign!
