After
the success of the start of the season whilst
targeting Rudd, I fancied having a crack at a few
River Carp. After a day spent walking the banks
looking for signs of a few fish, I soon came across
a couple of bow waves heading down stream; this was
instantly picked as my spot for the evening session!
Rather than fish three rods for Carp I decided to
have two out for Carp and fish a float rod in
between. One thing you will always notice when river
Carping is the sheer amount of what some may call
"Nuisance Species". You may have bubbles all over
your swim, but this doesn't necessarily mean that
the culprits are Carp. I personally love fishing for
all species, so fishing a 10mm boilie hard on the
bottom under a float whilst your waiting for the Carp
is a great way of passing the time.
First of
all I baited two marginal spots at the extreme ends
of my swim with particles, pellets and boilies for
the Carp set ups. I then baited with the same mix in
the margins by my bivvy and plumbed the depth ready
to float fish. After a couple of hours there was
fizzing everywhere and I knew my float was not be going
to hanging around for long. My first bite came from
a 2lb 3oz Rudd, then a 2lb 6oz, and then a cracking
specimen of 3lb. The float rod had been the
best idea of the session and by this time I would
have been happy to go home (yeah right!).
I
fished on until around 12am with the float, but no more
Rudd were forthcoming as I was soon invaded by a
shoal of Bream and Tench. I ended up landing
fish to 5lb 8oz of both species. I re-baited the
Carp rods and called it a night, it had been a great
evenings fishing! At around 4.30am I was awoken by
an absolute screamer, and as soon as I had got my
bearings I was making a beeline for the rod. As soon
as I struck I knew I was into a 20 plusser; what
with the paddle tail slapping the surface propelling
it down stream and a bow wave that Jaws would have
been proud of, it just had to be! After a manic
fight up and down the River I soon bundled it into
the net. As I lifted it out I realised that for the
third time this season I had another Carp at over
21lb in the net, total madness considering I had
waited so long for one! On the scales it went 23lb
5oz and made it PB number three for the season so
far. To top the session off, I landed another Mirror
of 20lb 5oz! This one was the shape of a torpedo and
has to be the longest Carp I have ever caught. This
one also fought like a tiger, but that just goes hand in
hand with River Carping. |
