24/09/06 - Mile hike pays off!

The weekend was finally here and once again after a mid week look up on Goggle Earth, another new venue had been chosen to check out. The only problem being was that it was going to require a long, long walk....

Wink and I had decided that we needed to seriously scale down, as most of the time our idea of this is to only take two bags of food rather than four! We scaled down to a single rod that would be suited to quiver tipping and stalking, and also a bit of float fishing should we need to. For bait we opted for two loafs of bread, one liquidized and the other in the bag, these were put in a bucket. We opted for one net rather than two. End tackle was stowed away in our recently purchased stalking jackets, the only problem being that mine had to many pockets and I kept loosing things!

We were still on the Chub hunt, and after introducing some floating crust and walking slowly behind it floating down the stream we soon located a shoal of feeding fish; well at least they were feeding for a minute or two anyway. As these fish soon disappeared, and also having walked further than i care to remember, we decided on sitting it out with the quiver tips. We set our rods up with small open end feeders and pinch a decent sized piece of bread onto a hair next to a size 10 hook.

As we were sitting back, contemplating what we may have in front of us, Wink's tip wrapped wound and he found himself playing a decent fish. As soon as it hit the surface the first thing we noticed was how long it was, but as you would expect for this time of year, it did not have the gut to match. On the scales it went a very satisfying 4lb, only 6oz below Winks PB.

We sat it out for a little longer after that fish, but soon decided it was time to move on. Had we found a new Chub hotspot within the Fens?
