After
landing my first 6lb Chub, I was still on cloud
nine. With my next session being on Blithfield in
search of Pike however, I thought might be on route
for a very bumpy landing down to earth! Both Chris
and I had decided that our Deadbaits weren't
producing as well as we'd originally hoped, and
because of this a decision to fish ultra hard with
the lures was made.
Just
like the previous weekend, we fished hard straight
from the off, but it wasn't until late in the
afternoon on the first day that we received our only
chance of the first day. After making a few casts in
a certain spot, both Chris and myself sat back to
have a chat and a bit of lunch. Topic during the
lunch break was how incredibly hard these waters can
be, but that all it ever takes is one cast. With
this in mind, and now full of renewed enthusiasm and
Cornish pasties, I began casting again.
The
first cast after lunch, saw my Fox Replicant
retrieved to the boat as usual, but my second went
slightly differently.... After hitting the water,
the Replicant began its journey between the
shoreline and our boat, but at around half way in,
everything went solid. Straight away I felt a head
shake, and informed Chris that I think we were going
to need the net. The fight was anything but
spectacular, and even though what I was attached to
was obviously a large fish, it never gave any
powerful runs. The fish still keeping deep, started
swimming next to the boat, and when it surfaced I
suddenly realised just how big the fish I had hooked
was. Luckily, the fish slid into the net at Chris's
first attempt. Looking over the edge into the net i
could not believe the sheer depth and width of the
fish, it was a million miles away from a fenland
fish. On the scales I weighed in a new PB at 26lb
on the nose. Pleased wasn't the word, and to catch it on a
lure was extremely pleasing!
The
following day was tough going, but a decision to go
and do a bit of trolling in the deeper water with
deep running crank baits soon resulted in another
decent fish. Running my Depth Raider lure in 20 foot
of water had the desired effect, and from casually
chatting to Chris I was soon frantically trying to
man the engine and also keep in contact with what
was obviously a decent fish. After a very similar
fight to the day before, another decent fish was
netted, but it wasn't quite as fat; this one
weighing in at 19lb 9oz. The rest of the day went by
without much action, but a quick stop over where the
19 was landed produced a couple of Jacks. One fell
to me on a deep working Jerk Bait, and another to
Chris on his new Wobbly Bob lure. Roll on February
when we're back! |
