During a
recent Pike Anglers Club meeting at Bottisham
Legion, I volunteered myself to help out at a
charity Pike match. The Charity was the Marie Curie
Cancer Care. I had never really been a big fan of
Pike matches, but as this was for a very worthy
course, I felt only too happy to help. All I was
required to do was walk the banks between pegs 26
and 38 making sure that if anyone needed any
assistance I was there to help. I was also there to
weigh and keep track of the fish caught on my
section.
I knew
it was going to be a long day, as the match ran from
9am until 3pm. During the whole day I was praying
constantly for the guys on my section to catch,
partly for them, but also so that I had something to
do! I weighed my first Pike half way into the match,
this weighed 7lb 15oz and was caught by Cheshire PAC
member Mark Johnson. Mark had came all the way down
to support the cause and also had hopes of his first
Zander.
No
sooner had I weighed Marks fish in, the guy next
door was in with a 5lb'er, and then a fish that I
heard was one of the biggest during the whole match.
this weighed in at 8lb 2oz. This was strange in some
respects, but considering the very muddy clarity and
strength of current, it was hardly that surprising
that the Pike weren't really on the feed. The Zander
on the other hand, appeared to be putting in an
appearance all the way down the river, but the guys
on my section were having no such luck.
About
an 30 minutes from the end, one of the guys called
out and said that he had landed a Zander. I went
down to be greeted by a Zed of exactly 1lb 5oz....
Well at least I got to weigh one I suppose!
The
day really did turn out to be worthwhile, with all
in all around £2,500 being raised for the charity.
