After my
initial specimen Tench session on
31/03/06
being
such a let down, I had high hopes for my second
attempt at the species. My first port of call
however was to try and extract a double figure Bream
for July's edition of Coarse Fisherman using the
method feeder. I had plenty of pictures of big Bream
from last years attempts at the species, but a
recent fish and especially some action shots always
make the article a bit more special. I was fishing
this session with good friend Paul Groves, who also
actually happens to be my boss from work! Paul used
to dabble a lot in fishing when he was younger, but
only got back into it a couple of years back when
Winky and I took him on a day ticket Carp water;
since then he has landed many decent fish and I
think its safe to say he's got back into the sport
in a big way!
Well,
from being told two days prior to our trip that the
lakes occupants were in a feeding frenzy, it soon
turned into the complete opposite! On arrival I was
welcomed with the harsh reality that no fish had
graced the bank during the night, not a great
confidence booster! Still very much determined we
both lugged all our gear to our chosen swims, set up
our bivvies and got about the job of marking out
some decent spots to present our baits. It wasn't
long before a guy a couple of swims down was asking
if I could come take a picture of a fish he had just
landed; this turned out to be a 20lb 8oz Mirror,
closely followed by a 22lb 8oz PB Mirror and then a
10lb 8oz PB Tench! An awesome result, hats off to
him!
Our
results were not quite as impressive however, no
sooner had this brief feeding spree started it
ended. All the fish soon came to the surface due to
the warm weather. Although I was supposedly Bream
and Tench fishing, I can never resist a chance at
stalking Carp off of the surface. My first attempt
went to plan as a decent mirror sucked in my fake
mixer right in the margins, but this came adrift at
the point of netting. I then redeemed myself with a
near 14lb Mirror on light line tactics and bait
banded mixer in open water. Unfortunately there
won't be a picture of this one as my attempts to get
a picture with it in the water were foiled when it
jumped and slapped me in the face, only for it to be
un-ceremoniously released back into the lake! The
rest of the session went by without much activity,
but I did manage a couple more Carp to 12lb with
Paul also catching the only Bream we heard of during
our stay; this one weighed about 6lb and did really raise
the question as to why the larger ones weren't feeding. Perhaps
they were getting ready to spawn, who knows? One
thing I do know however is that I must be due a good
session soon! |
