1/11/08 to 2/11/08 - Back to Blith

After fishing Blithfield last year, boat partner Chris had decided to opt out this time. This was mainly due to him not wanting anything to get in the way of his quest for a Fenland 30 pounder. I on the other hand, still really fancied it, and before long I was pencilled down to fish the 700 Acre mecca with friend Ian Moules. Ian had upped his Pike personal best to nearly 27lb at the end of last season, so we were both in the same situation regarding what we needed to catch to beat our current PB's. Blithfield was certainly going to give us a good chance.

As the first day arrived, we headed out onto the reservoir. This was Ian's first time afloat on the water, and I tried my best to familiarize him with our surroundings the best I could. As it turned out, the first day happened to be extremely difficult, and it was apparent that very few fish were being landed. During a few laps of the Reservoir trolling, we decided to anchor up in a spot where we had caught a couple of Jacks. This had the desired effect, and just as we were thinking of moving, Ian had something hit his Fox Replicant, just under the boat. The fish came out tail walking across the surface, and then we got her into the net. It wasn't a massive fish in Blithfield terms, but at 16lb 5oz it was enough to cheer us up. A couple of cast later, I had a slightly smaller fish follow my Fox Deviant all the way to the surface before turning away at the last second.

That turned out to be the end of the fishing for the day, and come 4.30 we were packed and off to the local Inn. After a little bit of a social drink-off, the sheets were hit around 2.00am. Come the next day, a few of us had already decided that due to how fish the water had fished the previous day, we would get up a little later and have breakfast. Thank god, I really wasn't feeling overly sharp!

As we headed out to the wind swept Reservoir, I decided that I needed a little more sleep, so promptly passed out in the front of the boat for a couple of hours whilst Ian trolled a few laps. When I woke up, there was talk of a couple of good fish having come out, straight away I tried to muster the energy I needed. It wasn't to happen though, and about 5 jacks later to trolling methods, we were on our way back home. Next session will be the one!
