16/06/08 to 13/07/08 - Not what it used to be....

With June 16th finally here, I should have been excited, right? Well, actually as keen as I was to get on the Rivers and Drains, I just couldn't get excited about the first venue on my hit list. Probably for the first time in writing for various magazines, I actually was regretting my choice for a certain piece, for one of them. As you can quite clearly see by this website, Rudd are a firm favourite of mine, and I was very lucky to find a fantastic Rudd haven in my younger years. For pretty much every year since, I have enjoyed fantastic Rudd sport and really have reaped the rewards. This year however, my heart really hasn't been into the venue, and thoughts of other pioneering adventures have been much higher on my priorities, but still, I needed to get a promised article in the bag!

The first night of the season was a dead loss, with only one large Rudd slipping up to the float fished corn baits, but this was lost at the net. After this session, a roaming approach was decided on, but in a short evening session not a single Rudd made it's presence known. This was frustrating, not only could I still not move onto elsewhere due to the looming article, but I can honestly say I've never really struggled to catch one of the large Rudd. After four sessions I finally landed my target, a lovely 2lb 9oz Rudd. I went on to add a few more decent fish as well, but they all had one thing in common, they all looked like they had been through the wars.

During every session I also saw something else which put me off the water; other anglers! Having so many other quiet waters around me, I have got a little spoilt with regards to where I fish. A few more fish did come during the few sessions I had, including a 1lb 11oz Silver Bream, many Tench to 6lb 2oz, plus three Carp to 17lb 4oz on floating bread crust.

I'm sure I will continue to fish the Drain in the future for its inhabitants, but for now, I really want to get looking into some other waters I have in mind. One of these waters has potential to completely blow the Rudd in the Drain away, in terms of size, but it will take a bit more effort to crack. With River Carp being another aim for this season, this was to be my next venture, and I had just the place in mind!
