Every so
often, I see a picture of something that leaves me
mesmerised. I received such a picture during the end
of April from my friend Chris. I have been looking after a lake
for Chris close to my home for a while now, and with
Chris knowing my passion for fishing places
surrounded by mystery, he knew instantly that I was
going to be impressed by a small water he knew of,
not to mention the occupants that had been netted
during a routine inspection. When I opened my email
inbox one morning, the picture below was attached,
followed by an invitation to fish the water; as you
can probably guess, after I finally snapped out of
an hour long stare, I had the day booked off there
and then!
Perch
are a magnificent species anyway, but the pictured
two just blew my mind. Both looked well in excess of
4lb to me, possibly more! With spawning likely to
take place at anytime, I knew I was only gong to
manage the one session this season, so did my best
to be prepared. As I knew sleeping the night before
was going to be difficult, I spent it chasing
lobworms around the garden till I had enough; this
proved to be more frustrating than fishing!
On
arriving at the water, I was greeted by Chris and
venue Bailiff Daryl. Both showed my Dad and I around
the lake and pointed us in the direction of a few
likely spots. I began by fishing lobworms over
chopped baits to start with, as I knew catching
lives from this particular water would be best done
after I had fished for the Perch during the early
hours. Straight away I was into Perch, but nothing
above a 1lb. Before long I hit into my first good
fish at just over 2lb, but this proved to be the
only decent fish during the morning.
The
afternoon was spent gathering livebaits and having a
good look around the lake. As the evening came, I
set both myself and my Dad up with a light
paternostered livebait rig. We then both fished
separate swims with lovely overhanging trees. In the
couple of hours leading up towards darkness I
managed a brace of 2lb'ers, whilst Dad wasn't so
lucky, but managed to do a first for us both. From
the next swim I could hear Dad getting excited about
being hooked into something quite large, and when I
went over to see, I was straight away welcomed by a
very large mirror Carp on the surface with a small
live Perch flapping in it's lips! This was the last
sighting of it though, and on the next run, the hook
pulled.... never mind. Next year we'll definitely be
back! |
