14/03/08 to 28/04/08 - Ressie Perching

As the 2007 season came to a close, I knew straight away where I wanted to head. I had located a small deep pit some time back with a huge head of stunted Rudd, instantly I was thinking large Perch. Unfortunately though, after three sessions fishing lives and lobworms, I hadn't had so much as a sniff. Perhaps the lake didn't contain any Perch after all? Or perhaps there was only a low stock of large fish? either way, I had other places to try, the mystery of this pit would have to wait till next season.

With lure, and jig fishing in particular, now being quite an addiction, I couldn't wait to get out for the Perch on the ressie again. Perch at this time of year get a lot heavier due to building up to spawn, and with this they appear extremely healthy and in fantastic condition. Having learnt an awful lot about jig fishing over the past few months, I couldn't wait to have a crack at them, so got myself kitted up with a good selection of Fox Zander Pro shads in various 'loud' colours. Perch just seem to love bright coloured jigs, with bright yellows and greens being a favourite.

As I expected, the fishing on the ressie proved to be exceptionally good, and even though the best fish only just made 2lb 8oz, it didn't matter in the slightest. Each one of these fish was in absolute stunning condition, and with the average size being around 2lb, I could hardly complain! As well as the Perch, the odd large carnivorous Brown trout also slipped up to the jigs on a number of occasions, adding a bit of variety.

If there was one thing I had leant from fishing this water, it was how locating Perch was paramount to success. There only appeared to be the odd pocket of fish, but if you found them, they would follow jigs all the way to the surface, even in so much as 20 plus feet of water. In fact on the largest Perch taken during my sessions actually took a jig off the surface, after it had been wound all the way up from 10 feet of water!

This fishing kept me occupied for a good couple of weeks, but I was soon presented with a new water with potential I could only dream about. With very little time left before the Perch spawned, I just had to take a look!
