6/08/08 to 3/09/08 - Saltwater Action

This year, I set a totally different target for myself. In all the years I had been fishing, I had still yet to really do a lot of Sea fishing. Most Sea species don't really interest me, but a couple were just shouting out to me to be caught! The first on my hit list was Bass. This species can quite happily be caught on coarse tackle, and the thought of catching them on lures really excited me. My first session was out aboard my Friend Mike's boat, where we drifted rag worms through an estuary. As it happened, my first Bass turned out to be my biggest and weighed in at 3lb 7oz. Regrettably, I  never got a picture of this, but according to my parents, it did taste quite nice!

Many more Bass where landed on the three sessions I had out on Mikes boat, but before long, my other target was just crying out to be caught. On the second trip out for the Bass, whilst walking along the jetty to the boat I heard a large splash directly underneath me. On quizzing Mike, I was told in a very casual manner, "it's just a Mullet....". This was Sea species number two on my list, and after that splash, I couldn't stop seeing these silver missiles casually swimming around under moored boats and staging's. After much nagging and persuading, I managed to blag Mike to take me down there so I could have a crack at them.

During the journey down, Mike admitted that he expected me to blank, and that he was just going to put up a chair and laugh as I got frustrated. As it turned out however, I was to have the last laugh! Having never fished for Mullet before, I had made sure I had browsed every inch of Google to get as much info as I could. From what I could make out, they were going to be not to dissimilar to Chub. As recommended on a webpage, I began by hanging a onion sack full of bread out the back of the boat. Before long, I had Mullet milling around downtide of this. With my Barbel rod set up with a simple freeline rig, I cast a little piece of floating flake, only to have it hit instantly and for me to completely miss the bite! Mike thought I was having a laugh, but next cast saw me hook and land my first mullet at 5lb 10oz - what a fish! The fight was manic and left me hanging on for dear life on many occasions. Mike soon set a rod up as well, and we ended the day with 5 fish, my first being my biggest, and Mikes biggest going 6lb 9oz! Unfortunately, Mullet season was near on over already, and we had no time to have another go. I can tell you something though, I have been quite taken with this species, I'll be concentrating on them a bit next year that's for sure!
